Shell very large in adult specimens, length between four and five inches, height about two inches, thickness slightly less than height; bi-convex, greatest convexity near the umbos; equivalve. Hinge margin straight or nearly so, posterior margin curved, posterior extremity gaping; basal margin curved posteriorly, nearly straight along the middle where it is approximately parallel to the hinge; in front it passes abruptly into the anterior margin. Umbos projecting above the hinge line;
