[page]177.[/page] exception, to the noncontinuity of the strata of the coal measures. It is in the Mystic coal field of Appanosse County. There the coal seam underlies an area fifty miles long and forty miles in breadth. This area includes Appanoose County, and parts of Wayne and Lucas Counties, in Iowa, and parts of Putnam and Schuyler Counties in Missouri. Not only is the coal seam constant but so are the associated strata. For example, there are two layers of limestone one seventeen feet above and the other fifty feet above the coal, which, except where worn away by erosion, serve as a guide to mine operators and prospectors. The beds of limestone are locally called the "seventeen foot" and the "fifty foot" limestones.
