[page]178.[/page] The faults occurring in the Iowa coal field are unimportant; the throw rarely exceeding four feet. The so called fault in the What Cheer district, which limits the coal seam on one side is really not a fault but an old bank or low cliff of limestone which formed one edge of the coal swamp. Of all serious problems encountered in mining coal in Iowa, those which result from erosion are perhaps the most serious. The erosion channels may be placed in three divisions: first, those which were formed during the Carboniferous epoch; second, pre-glacial channels; third, recent channels.
