[page]182.[/page] COAL MINING. Under this head, prospecting, locating the mine, sinking the shaft, and the several methods of work after the coal is reached will be considered briefly. Prospecting is the process of securing data concerning the coal seams. This is accomplished by means of "prospect" shafts or by drill holes. The former method is too expensive and is but seldom used. The second is the method in common use throughout all the coal fields. Either the diamond or the "churn" drill is used. In Iowa the churn drill is the one in common use, for the reason that its use is cheaper than that of the diamond drill. On the other hand the character of the strata is better determined by the diamond drill; because it cuts out a cylindrical core which is
