- Iowa City Press-Citizen - Friday, May 7, 1971 More Jailed After Night Of Protests At least 15 persons were jailed early today in connection with disturbances in downtown Iowa City overnight. One of the prisoners, a television newsman, was later released and no charges were filed against him. The newsman, Daryl Woodson of KCRG-TV, was twice attacked by lawmen as he attempted to film sherriff's deputies and demonstrators on Clinton Street near Iowa Avenue. The second time, Woodson was arrested as officers attempted to clear the streets shortly after midnight. Another newsman, Press-Citizen Photographer Joseph A. Novotny had his glasses knocked off when he was shoved back by deputies. He was not permitted to retrieve them until later. Those arrested on charges of unlawful assembly include Dan G. Kaloupek, 119 South Linn Street, who also was charged with disorderly conduct' Betty A. Wood, Currier Hall dormitory; Katherine R. Parrot, 1018 North Summit Street; Mark D. Larson, no address listed; David L. Kurt, 509 South Linn Street; Richard L. Fry rear, 329 North Dubuque Street; William F. Cox, Route 2; and Michael Maxwell of Dubuque. Charged with resisting execution of process were Dennis R. Liming of Ames and Lawrence K. McClure of Greenfield. Both are awaiting arraignment in city jail. Also arrested in last night's disruption were Steven E. Mayer of Coralville and Dean A. Zoernick of Iowa City, both on intoxication charges, and Kent Simon of Iowa CIty, charged with larceny over $20. Authorities also filed charges Thursday against two persons in connection with Wednesday night's disturbances. Charged were Emanuel Zulakis of Quadrangle Dormitory on two counts of riotous conduct and injury to property and Bill Shepard on a charge of malicious injury to a building. Mayer and Zoerink have been released from county jail on bond. Smon [Simon] was scheduled to be arraigned today. Kaloupek rmains [remains] in county jail pending bond on disorderly conduct charges after being fined $105 in Police Court this morning following a plead of guilty to unlawful assembly. Larson, Miss Parrott, Cox and Liming have entered pleas of innocent to the unlawful assembly charges. Larson has been released on $105 bond.
