p. 4 (of 4 DMR 5/8/71 IOWA CITY--- Continued from Page One warnings of student monitors that police were waiting at the courthouse grounds. A half-block from the courthouse, Sheriff Maynard Schneider's riot-equipped deputies emerged to disperse the crowd. "Pepper Foggers" Two deputies carried "pepper foggers." Designed to spread tear gas, the hand-held devices Thursday night spewed a thick white cloud of smoke which contained an unidentified chemical. Schneider refused to disclose the chemical being sprayed. The smoke had an odor similar to that of insecticides sprayed on trees. Schneider said tear gas was available for psosible use later. Deputies chased the crowd back to the Pentacrest where officers and young persons faced off nearly two hours. Spectators gathered on the sidewalks, and by midnight the crowd had grown to some 1,000 persons. Fifteen deputies stood in front of a group of about 200 hecklers. Student monitors stood between the two factions. Finally, the monitors convinced Schneider to pull back his men to allow students to handle the situation. Schneider co-operated, but refused to leave the immediate area. Hat Target The core of hecklers remained and soon one of the group darted at Schneider and attempted to take the sheriff's riot helmet. At that point Schneider called for reinforcements. Three busloads of officers—including Iowa City police and highway patrolmen—arrived and the crowd scattered. At least thirteen arrests were made during the 90-minute sweeping operation by officers. Newsmen once again were the targets of police harassment. A cameraman-reporter for KCRG-TV of Cedar Rapids, Daryl Woodsen, was taken into custody after trying to film the arrest of one youth. He was detained for three hours and released without being charged. Reporters nd photographers for other news media also report they have been "roughed up" by club-carrying officers while trying to gather information. On Wednesday night, two newsmen were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. Heavy Rain A heavy midday rain Friday halted a scheduled picketing of the U of I administration headquartered at Jessup Hall. Only about six persons showed up for a half hour, protesting what they called the university's "involvement" in the Indochina war. No rallies had been planned for Friday night. Protest leaders said workshops will be held this weekend to plan "militant action" aimed at the university on Monday. Meanwhile, City Manager Frank Smiley said Friday the city has not decided whether to seek a court injunction banning disruptive demonstrations here. Last spring, such an injunction was issued during student un- Arrow points to area where authorities believe the bomb was placed outside the building's foundation. View from inside the structure shows hole in wall left by the blast.
