P-C 5/10/17 20 Students at UI Stage Sit-In Outside Boyd Office By MARK F. ROHNER Of the Press-Citizen About 20 University of Iowa students staged a sit-in this noon outside the office of UI President Willard L. Boyd to dramatize their demands for an end to ROTC and layoffs of campus workers. The demonstrators left within half an hour after Boyd failed to appear. The rally began on the east steps of Old Capitol where about 100 persons listened to speakers attack the layoffs, ROTC, "male chauvinism" racism and the Vietnam war. One of them Steven Carl, called on students to "reject the tactics of last week" which he said, "are ineffective and hurt working people" The crowd also watched a skit portraying students protesting the war and being beaten by the police. The crowd, chanting "ROTC must go , no more layoffs," then marched to Boyd's office to present their demands. But Boyd was out to lunch. They milled about briefly in Jessup Hall then sat down outside Boyd's office to await his return. Asst. Provost Philip G. Hubbard and Robert Engel, assistant to the president met the crowd and were questioned about layoffs of campus workers. "We've researched the matter sufficiently " Hubbard said. "We'll make the decision." "I want to assure you that your demands have been registered." Engel said. The students then asked Hubbard and Engel about campus workers "scrubbing johns" "I doubt that anybody here has scrubbed as many johns as I have," Hubbard commented.
