P-C 5/12/71 Dorm Groups Contemplate Legal Action Against City by MARK F. ROHNER of the Press- Citizen Dormitory associations at Hillcrest and the Quadrangle say they are preparing to take action against the city for damage to residents' possessions caused when police fired teargas into the buildings Monday night. Hillcrest president James Pendleton said today he felt the police action was "arbitrary, illegal and in violation of our rights." Pendleton said the police fired several tear gas canisters through windows into halls at Hillcrest. He said he knew of none fired into rooms. Residents of Hillcrest and the quad are being asked to fill out reports damage the tear gas did to the rooms or possessions. "very few" reports have thus far been returned, Pendleton said. He said many students reported clothing damaged by the gas. in addition, burn marks were left on floors by the gas canisters, he said. The irritating gas still lingered in some parts of the building early this afternoon. Pendleton said, making it difficult for many students to remain in their room to study. after reports have been returned and verified, a decision will be made on what action will be taken against the city, said Pendleton.
