"Students, 125 patrolmen clash in UI Dorm area" cont. P-C 5/12/71 Disorder from Page 1A men. A few battered the car with their night sticks as it sped , but failed to slow it down. The driver, identified as Donald C. Lee, 326 North Johnson Street, was subsequently arrested and charged with reckless driving. About 12:45 a.m. the Highway Patrol advanced toward the mob, dodging rocks and bottles, forcing it to relinquish the intersection and retreat into the dormitory. Some protesters stood outside the building taunting police and continuing the hall of debris. A tear gas canister was fired into a small crowd which has gathered between Hillcrest and Rienow I, and the Highway Patrol charged further up Grand Avenue and eventually took control of the street separating Hillcrest from the Quadrangle dormitory. With the patrolmen caught between the two dorms, the residents used the sanctuary of the residence halls to pelt them and reporters with just about anything not tied down. Some persons ventured outside the buildings but were quickly chased back inside by club- swinging patrolmen. Some patrolmen did enter the Quadrangle dormitory after a resident reportedly ignited a smoke bomb in a hallway. He was later arrested. A withdrawal by patrolmen falled to quiet the area. They regrouped and charged again after a taunting crowd gathered outside the dorms began finding the range with bottles and rocks. At one point officers were sprayed by water from a fire hose at Quadrangle. At 2 a.m., the patrolmen withdrew to the Riverside Drive - Burlington Street intersection. Some demonstrators followed, tossing more racks and fire crackers from the catwalk, but a final gas grenade sent most back inside for the night. Iowa city police who had been patrolling the downtown area while the patrolmen handled the dormitory disturbances, were on hand during the final half-hour of the fracas to back up the patrolmen but were not utilized. City officials today said an estimate of damage to stoplights and street signs at the contested intersection has not yet been made. University dormitory officials spent the morning touring the residence - battleground, and assessing the damage, but no estimate of dorm damage has yet been made.
