P-C 5/12/71 Three More Arrested Three persons were arrested Wednesday afternoon on warrants issued in connection with disturbances here last week. The three, all charged with riotous conduct, are Patrick A. Martin, 18, of the Quadrangle; Kirk Alexander, 20 of Rienow II dormitory; and Lawrence F. Jones, 18 of the Quad Additional charges of possession of marijuana were filed against Martin and Alexander after police allegedly discovered the drug on their persons when they were searched at Police Headquarters. Martin and Alexander were apprehended near the Iowa Avenue bridge. Jones was arrested a short time afterward at his dormitory room. Police Judge Joseph Thornton set bond for Martin and Alexander at $2,000 each and for Jones at $1,000. P-C 5/13/71 Six Arrested Last Week Convicted of Charges Six persons arrested in disorders here last week were convicted of misdemeanor charges in Police Court Wednesday. Two were found innocent and three others had their cases dismissed. In handling down one of the convictions, Police Judge Joseph Thornton commented, "If you're foing to hand on your rights you're going to hang in this court." Thornton was referring to a contention that one of the defendants, Patrick Russell, was merely exercising his right to be on an Iowa city street when he was arrested. Russell testified that he and three friends were attempting to comply with police orders to get off the streets and go home early the morning of May 6. Thornton said "the police have a duty to clear streets" of disorderly crowds and "anyone who asserts his right to be on a public street does so at his own peril" under those circumstances. Local attorney Joseph C. Johnston, who represented many of the defendants, later said Thornton was "authorizing wholesale arrests of innocent people who happen to be in the area" while police are restoring order. Ordered to pay $100 fines after being convicted or disorderly conduct were: Russell of Riverwoods, III; Robert Ziegler, 10 Melrose Court; Beauford Salisbury, 904 Oakcrest Street; Harold Erickson, 219 Church Street; and Steven Homma of Highland Park III. Dennis Liming of Ames was fined $100 on a charge of resisting execution of process. Thornton dismissed disorderly conduct charges against Peter Middlecamp of Kansas City, Mo; Victoria Millard of Woodbine and Wesley Rasan of Clarinda. Found innocent of disorderly conduct were Thomas Reid of Route 6 and Charles Oliver of Turin.
