P-C 10/16/71 Activist Sies' Sentence Changed Iowa City's police court judge came in for some criticism Thursday from a Johnson County District Court judge who changed the police court sentence of Jerry Sies, local activist, from 30 days in jail to a $100 fine. Police Court Judge Joseph Thornton last May found Sies and 14 others guilty of the same charge stemming from a University of Iowa day care dispute. Thornton gave Sies a jail sentence, while the 14 students were fined $100 each. The District Court judge, Clinton Shaeffer., Thursday said " I am not personally acquainted with Mr. Sies ad I don't know him as well as the judge of the police court. But punishment should be meted out equally," In Sies' new trial in District Court, the evidence showed that Sies did not contribute any more of the leadership than did the other parties, said Shaeffer. City attorneys claimed Sies was more involved in the incident than the others. Sies and the other 14 day care supporters were arrested April 11 when they entered and remained in the UI Language House without authorization, The demonstrators brought children with them. The group was attempting to point up what it saw as a need for university day care facilities and had charged UI officials with stalling for months on any decision Subsequent to the Language House incident, University officials worked out arrangements for Dum Dum and several other day care groups. DI 12/1/71 Punished Disciplinary sanctions have been imposed by the University of Iowa against four persons accused of violating university and Board of Regents conduct rules last May during demonstrations on the campus. The sanctions were imposed by UI Pres. Willard L. Boyd following his review of the findings of a hearing officer who heard the cases in September. Placed on disciplinary probation for the current academic year was Spencer R. Hall, 1032 North Dubuque Street, while Harold J. Erickson, 219 East Church Street and Lawrence F. Jones, Bettendorf, neither currently enrolled, will be on probation until the end of the first full academic year for which they next register, Another person charged in connection with an incident last May accepted administrative sanction of one year suspension from the university and did not request a hearing before Theodore G, Garfield, Ames attorney who is the UI hearing officer President Boyd took no additional action against a fifth person, Marshall D, Buddin, H6 Holiday Garden Apartment, who is currently on probation as a result of an earlier incident in which several persons occupied a university owned house and refused to leave.
