P-C Thursday, April 20, 1972 Anti-War Activities Set Friday A group of 60 University of Iowa students and Iowa City residents met Wednesday to form the Iowa City Anti-War Coalition, and declared Friday as a "Day of Disgust" over the escalation of the Vietnam War. The group scheduled a vigil and rally as part of the day's antiwar activities. A "silent peace vigil" will be held on Clinton Street at the Pentacrest beginning at 8:30 a.m. It will be followed at 12:30 p.m. by a rally on the Pentacrest. A national student strike to protest the war also had been called for Friday and has been endorsed here by the UI Student Senate. However, a coalition spokesman, Joel Haeffner, said the group is not calling for a strike, but instead is encouraging "alternative activities" such as classroom discussions on the war. The group agreed at Wednesday's meeting that "all antiwar protests should remain nonviolent." Haefner said. DMR 4/21/72 U OF IOWA PROTESTS By a Staff Writer IOWA CITY , IA- A day of "alternative activities" to classroom work has been organized here today by University of Iowa (U of I) student antiwar leaders protesting the Indochina war. The student leaders have dubbed the series of events as a "Day of Disgust" A peace vigil, a rally on the U of I Pentacrest, films guerrilla theater and a "people's trial" are some of the activities planned. The 12:30 p.m. rally will feature speeches by U of I President Willard L. Boyd; faculty and staff members, as well as an appearance by Leona Durham, last year's editor of the Daily Iowan, the student newspaper. The "Day of Disgust" is to coincide with nation wide student anti-war activities. Although on some campuses student leaders are calling for a strike, the U of I peace activists have urged local students "to leave class, but not strike," DMR 4/19/72 U of I Students To Protest Today By a Staff Writer IOWA CITY, IA - A "human chain" will encircle the University of Iowa ( U of I) Pentacrest for two hours today to protest the escalation of U.S. bombing in North Vietnam, U of I student anti war leaders here said Tuesday that the encirclement of the Pentacrest is to dramatize the size of a crater left by one American bomb dropped in the Southeast Asian war. "We want to bring the war home" said Helen Herrick, a graduate student from Rustin, La., and a spokesman for the groups organizing the events.. But student leaders did not call for a student strike as some national student leaders have. Instead, local anti-war leaders have called on individuals to "take part in a personal strike" in order to attend the scheduled antiwar activities. On Thursday, a nation touring exhibit - the "Indochina Mobile Education Project" will be set up at the Mall Shopping Center for three days. Appearing with the Indochina exhibit will be Don Luce, 37, who gained international; fame with his discovery of the so called "tiger cages" in a Vietnamese prison. Luce will also present a public lecture Friday at the First Congregational Church here.
