P-C 4/3/72 Volunteer 'Monitors' Sought at UI An advisory committee to University of Iowa President Willard L. Boyd has sent out memos to the university faculty and staff asking for volunteers to be "monitors" if a campus disturbance occurs this spring. The memo says the monitors will be placed at "strategic points when a confrontation appears probable." Rapping with demonstrators and onlookers will be another function of the monitors, the letter adds. Eugene Spaziani, member of the Security Committee which is organizing the recruitment said he has received about 500 letters back but has not had time to tabulate how many persons have volunteered. Many returned letters have just comments as to the monitor idea. He said the committee is planning in he near future to organize student monitors with the help of student government. "It isn't a last minute thing." Spaziani said, "but it is something we developed in the last month, It is strictly long range planning." Spaziani said the monitor organization "all came too late" He said such organization should have been done in earlier years "I don't think anything is going to come off this spring," he said "but I'm glad we're getting prepared."
