HLADKY Of the Press-Citizen Uncertainty about future protests persists in Iowa City today after a large but generally peaceful, disturbance Tuesday night. People involved said that more protests will follow but no concrete plans have yet been made. Although the uncertainty is keeping the 180 State Highway Patrol officers in Iowa City at least until late tonight, the atmosphere today seemed relatively calm. Participants believe they can keep the crowds peaceful as they did most of the time Tuesday night. Organizational efforts for Tuesday night's disturbance stemmed from several sources. The anonymous announcement of a 7:30 p.m., rally came from students living in Hillcrest Dormitory Leaflets which came out Monday night after President Nixon's speech came from people living off campus. Meanwhile, organizational attempts by town and University of Iowa student groups to express more direct opposition to the Vietnam War are resulting in additional uncertainty. A vigil at the Iowa City Post Office is scheduled from 6 to 8 a.m. Thursday to coincide with the arming of the mines in Haiphong harbor Johnson County's three state legislators Sen. Minnette Doderer and Reps, Joseph Johnson and Arthur A. Small are scheduled to attend. The organizers of the vigil who call themselves the Iowa City Action Coalition also plan a rally on the State Capitol grounds in Des Moines Saturday. The Iowa City contingent is planning to leave the Memorial Union about 9 a.m. The caravan plans to stop in communities along the way to solicit additional support. But while the Iowa City Action Coalition is planning a Saturday Des Moines protest, another group in the community. JOANNE BRUEGGER Of the Press-Citizen The human relations climate - particularly incidence of racism - in Iowa City public schools will be investigated by an independent committee, following action Tuesday night by the Iowa City School Board The Board asked Simon Walk East Albert Jagnow, reportedly said to a student that day that "the only good nigger is a dead nigger," Jagnow later said the remark was intended to jest and apologized. An executive session of the school board May 1 resulted in concurrence with an administrative reprimand but the teacher was not fired. DALE Of the Press-Citizen Property owners in Johnson County who depend on wells for their water were warned today by the Iowa Geological Survey, in the face of falling water supplies to "get advice and get it early." Samuel J. Tuthill, repeating a note of several weeks ago, said today the level of water available to private wells is continuing to fall "very rapidly" and it appears to be a trend. " I rather suspect it will fall further," Tuthill survey director and state geologist, added He advised well owners to immediately have their wells checked by a professionally qualified person.
