"Future Was Protest Plans Shrouded in Uncertainties " P-C May 10, 1972 p.6 (of 6) Plans From Page 1A plans a Thursday Des Moines protest. Kristine Thieker, a member of the UI student executive committee, said she had been organizing the Thursday protest. She said protest organizers hope to meet this afternoon to coordinate efforts and reduce the confusion. Plans for the vigil and Saturday caravan came from a Tuesday afternoon meeting. Also at that meeting another, smaller group formed to plan a caravan to Washington D.C. David Schuldt, Wesley Foundation director, who was at the meeting, said the 30 people present felt that both caravans were possible. Sue Ross, a member of the student executive committee, was attempting to organize the Washington D.C., trip this morning. Robert Handy, who is advocating the Washington trip, said he envisioned it as a means of drawing favorable attention. He said the protesters could start a march on foot to Chicago. He said the march would bring more positive publicity than city protests. Handy said Sen. Harold Hughes' office told him Tuesday that the senator would endorse the march if organized. Paul Frazenburg, candidate for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, officially endorsed the proposed march this morning. Robert Holetz, of the Iowa Department of Public Safety who is in Iowa City during the disturbances said the highway patrol would give the Washington D.C. marchers escort to the state border. He added the group would have to stay off the interstates.
