P-C May 13, 1972 Patrol Leaving Iowa City The Iowa Highway Patrol, quartered here since Tuesday to quell massive antiwar demonstrations that have broken out this week, is going home today. The Emergency Operations Board, in effect since Tuesday, was deactivated about 10 a.m. today, returning control of law enforcement here to local officials. Deputy State Public Safety Commissioner Robert Holetz, who served here as an administrative aide to the operations board, said the nearly 200 patrolmen lodged in Coralville will be leaving in small groups "all through the course of the day." The entire 400-man state police force will remain on "standby alert," Holetz said. "I think the feeling of the patrol is that the vast majority of students are concerned now with their examinations coming up next week," Holetz said. "It was a quiet night last night and dew people seemed to be interested in protest." Holetz said there continue to be unconfirmed reports of plans to organize a second attempt to block Interstate 80, as protesters succeeded in doing briefly Thursday night. "We hear things, but we can not justify keeping 200 men here just on the basis of rumors," said Holetz.
