DMSR 5/14/72 PATROL LEAVES IOWA CITY AREA ( The Register's Iowa News Service) IOWA CITY, IA - The 200 Iowa Highway patrolmen stationed in Iowa City since last Tuesday to quell antiwar demonstrations left for home Saturday. The Emergency Operations Board, a joint law-enforcement command agency, was deactivated by Gov. Robert Ray about 10 a.m. Saturday as antiwar activities appeared to be winding down. "Quiet Night" Deputy Public Safety Commissioner Robert Holetz said the "vast majority of students are concerned with their examinations coming up next week. "It was a quiet night (Friday) and few people seemed to be interested in protest," according to Holetz. Friday night's demonstration never really got under way as some 200 would be protesters were separated into small groups by officers as they gathered on the University of Iowa campus. Rumors of vigilantes heard during the week materialized as some 20 Iowa City youths waited Friday night for demonstrators to come through the north part of town on their way to Interstate Highway 80 again. Demonstrators blocked the highway for a brief period Thursday night and were discussing another attempt Friday. Police juvenile officials said the 20 youths waiting for them had piles of rocks and home made brass knuckles. A Skirmish One skirmish did erupt between U of I students and a group of local juveniles. Three of the juveniles were arrested on charges of assault and battery. Police would not release their names. The 20 youths never got the chance to confront protesters as patrolmen dispersed the gathering before the group left the campus area. Seven other persons were arrested by Iowa HIghway patrolmen during Friday night's disturbances. William G. Monahan of Iowa City and Jay Honeycutt of Toledo were arrested on charges of criminal trespass. Arrested on charges of disorderly conduct were Jeff L. Cox, a freshman from Bettendorf; Edward J. Bolden, a junior from Montclair, N.J; Rodney P. Miller, a freshman from Kent; Steven J. Henely, a sophomore from Estherville; and Larry R. Norby, a junior from Davenport.
