P. C. 1/7/71 -- Legal Defense Fund Meeting Tonight -- Two in Protest Case Petition for 'Speedy Trial' Two defendants in a trial of 210 protesters here have withdrawn their names from a writ of certiorari petition and have asked for a "speedy trial" in Police Court. The two, Rodney Stone and Thomas Gilloon, were among 109 whose names were listed on the petition, which asks for a review of pre-trial rulings by Police Judge Joseph Thornton. Thornton said today he had not yet schedulel trials for Stone and Gilloon. No trials will be held, Thornton said, until a hearing is held to determine whether the writ of certiorari, authorizing a review of Thornton's rulings, should be issued. That hearing is set for 3 p.m. Monday in District Court here. All 210 defendants have been granted continuances until a decision is made on whether the writ should issue. Meanwhile, the Legal Defense Fund for defendants in the case has scheduled a meeting for 7:30 p.m. today in the Hawkeye Room of the Memorial Union. A spokesman for the Defense Fund, Roland Schembari, said J. Newman Toomey, a defense lawyer in the case, would explain the writ of certiorari petition to defendants at the meeting. Also to be discussed, Schembari said, are possible ways of soliciting contributions from outside the Legal Defense Fund. The possibility of setting up a permanent defense and bail fund as a non-profit corporation will also be discussed, he said.
