DMSI 1/10/71 INVITATIONS TO U OF I HEARING By Larry Eckholt (Register Staff Writer) IOWA CITY, IA. - Eleven persons charged with violating University of Iowa conduct rules stemming from a Dec. 9 demonstration at the U of I placement office have "subpoenaed" a number of university officials to appear at Wednesday's hearing into the protest. Called by the "collective defense" to be witnesses at the hearing are members of the State Board of Regents, U of I President Willard Boyd and his assistant, Robert Engel, Liberal Arts Dean Dewey B. Stuit, placement office director Helen Barnes and Ray L. Heffner, U of I provost. In a letter to the officials, the "collective defense" admitted it has no legal power to call the officials to appear at the hearing. However, "your failure to come to the hearings will only serve to reinforce the unfair and repressive nature of this hearing," the letter said. The hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the College of Law courtroom. It will be presided over by retired Iowa Supreme Court Justice Theodore Garfield. Seven U of I students, three non-students and the organization Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) have been charged with violating the Regents' Rules of Personal Conduct during a sit-in at the placement office in protest of a U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) recruiter's appearance here. A student judicial body will try the "DIA 11" on Tuesday, Student Body President Robert Beller said.
