Calm Protest at U of Iowa (The Register's Iowa News Service) IOWA CITY, IA. — Two dozen University of Iowa students Monday picketed the Engineering Placement Office on the U of I campus here to protest the presence of an Army Materiel Command recruiter. The protest was peacefl and there were no incidents. Although the demonstrators milled around in the hallway outside the placement office, sixteen students scheduled for interviews with the recruiter were allowed through. The protest was staged by two separate groups—Christians Affirming Life and Students for a Democratic Society. SDS members said they were protesting the Army Materiel Command's role in developing weapons for the war in Southeast Asia and riot control. Prof. Thomas Farrell, co-ordinator of the placement office, commanded the protesters. "They did a very nice job. I thought they showed very good sense," Farrell said. At noon, members of the placement office staff served coffee to the protesters.
