[handwritten] p.2 (of 4) TY PRESS-CITIZEN Local Weather Clear tonight Forecast - Page 5B Y, IOWA, TUESDAY EVENING, DECEMBER 5, 1967 3 SECTIONS-SECTION A 10 CENTS Rally Erupts at UI Students Arrested, Some Hurt With a cry of "Get Dow now" student protestors at the University of Iowa broke out of a rally and stormed through police lines at the Memorial Union where the Dow Chemical Co. is recruiting. In the violence that followed about a dozen persons were arrested. Several were [inured?]. Police used the chemical, Mace inside the Union. The demonstrations continued into the afternoon but no further violence had developed through 2 p.m. Asst. Police Chief Emmett E. Evans collapsed while on duty at headquarters of law enforcement agencies and was admitted to Mercy Hospital. The day began quietly with the picket lines which have marked the presence of Dow recruiters all over the country. About 30 persons marched slowly in a huge circle in front of the west door of the Union carrying signs decrying the use of napalm in Vietnam. Napalm a jelly-like explosive used by U.S. troops is manufactured by Dow, among others. An anti-Dow rally, scheduled for 10:30 was slow getting started, and perhaps 100 people milled around talking quietly in small groups. When the rally finally started at about 10:50, the first speaker was Prof. Robert Sayre of the English Department. He said he was proud of the work done by protestors so far but said there was a need for a "reappraisal of our tactics" We have to get more people [ineligible] this. We're not taking [ineligible] getting any bigger," A huge crowd began to gath 'Get Dow Now!' Protestors rushed into Memorial Union here today after a call to " Get Dow now" by Stephen G. Morris (top right). Police broke up the rush toward the third floor office where the Dow Chemical Co was recruiting and some protestors were placed under arrest (second from top). One of the many melees which broke out was at the ground floor elevator (bottom right). Another of the protestors was wrestled to the floor by officers (bottom left.) (Press-Citizen Photos)
