Negroes make up the largest minority in America. Those problems which face us, today, were created during the three hundred year period of slavery. Now, one century after the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation, ninety-five years after the 14th Amendment was passed, and nine years after the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court on the desegregation of schools, we are involved in a determined effort to gain first class citizenship.
The demonstrations, marches and sit-ins place before the public eye, the longstanding backlong of grievances which are ours. Those which are most important are: racial discrimination in employment, apprenticeship training and public accommodations, the supporting with Federal funds of segregated institutions, the denial of voting rights and the inadequate pace of the desegregation of schools.
In Iowa, our main concern is that our Senators and Congressmen have failed to actively support the Administrations current program for civil rights legislation. The agreement of Senator Miller to vote for cloture is favorable, but his being ready to give up on the public accommodations battle, before it begins is a deplorable attitude. We in the state of Iowa already are protected by a good public accomodations law.
Senator Hickenlooper cannot be counted on as he believes property rights should be held as more important than human rights and does not agree that the present race relations crisis in the Southern states should be dealt with by the extension of Federal Power.

Lets get behind those who are working on the Voter Registration Drive so that it will be a real success. If a member of the Committee has not contacted YOU ..., get in touch with them. Mr. Windsor is the Chairman. Remember your vote is needed!

CORRECTION!! American Paper Company hired the young man mentioned in the last newsletter..., instead of Mid-West Wax Paper.

One of our young girls was called for a part-time job by the Iowa State Employment Agency. If you are looking for a job, be sure to file an application, there, and inform one of the members of the Business and Industry Committee.

Mr. Leonard Carter, Field Secretary of Region 4 will be in Fort Madison this Friday, August 2, 1963 and will meet with the local branch of the NAACP. The meeting will be held in the River Room of the Hotel Anthes at 7:45 P.M. Lets show him that we in Fort Madison have an active branch by having more members present at this meeting than we have ever had!
