The mayor DID call a meeting of the Human rights Commission. Such a group should be instrumental in greatly improving the living conditions in our community. Contrary to popular belief,...those who prosper and rule are not really 'well off' unless the problems which are vital to all citizens are considered. We are looking forward to seeing much constructive work come from this committee.

Have YOU registered to vote??? Remember..., each vote counts!!! yours IS important!

Where have YOU been??? We have been looking for YOU at the branch meetings!!! If YOU have not joined the fight for freedom,...do so, NOW!!! If we do have YOUR membership, come to the meetings and take an active part!!! YOUR participation is important!!!

The STATE CONVENTION will be held in Burlington, Iowa October 5th and 6th. We are anxious to have a good sized representation in attendance. If it is at all possible, try to attend. Details will be given at the branch meeting. Banquet tickets are available, now. The planned program offers much which should benefit all of us. If you have never participated in a demonstration connected with the fight for civil rights, those of us who have can tell you it is a tremendously moving experience. Try to attend! It will be worth your time and effort!

Often our goals are misunderstood and because of this, they cannot be repeated too often. In fact, many of us lose sight of their importance. Demonstrations, marches, sit-ins, selective buying campaigns and all the other methods used in this struggle for full citizenship rights are not without meaning. Nor do these things become organised because a group of citizens who are protesting discrimination have aims which can be considered unreasonable. In spite of the varied opinions which are expressed, daily, this is not a fight for social interaction...but a fight for full citizenship rights. As human beings, who are unique because as Negroes, they are a product of America, a definite part of America's history and irrevocably a part of this country's future, we are entitled to certain rights. We are determined in our effort to attain first class citizenship. We want equal opportunity to obtain those jobs for which we are qualified. We want the opportunity to improve our economic situation and, therefore, improve our living conditions. We want the opportunity to move as we are able without fear of encountering the debasing humiliation which accompanies discriminatory practices. We want the right to live anywhere just as every other American does. Ideally, if those to whom this protest movement seems unreasonable, could take the place of a Negro American, there would be no more doubt as to the justness of our cause. This cannot be, however, and in effect,...it would be chaotic. The strength which is witnessed in the south, today, and in many cases in the north is not new. It has been instilled and comes from generations who have suffered indescribable injustices. Everyone is involved, be it willing, or not! those of us who are involved, actively, have cast our lot to fight to the finish...and we mean to win. Ours is a dream to be realized..., and we shall overcome!
