Saving...
Fort Madison, Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People NEWSLETTER IKE SMALLS TROPHY WINNER OF 1963 FEBRUARY 13, 1964 Fort Madison, Iowa 52627 The members of the Fort Madison, Branch of the NAACP, are losing one of their more ardent, and, certainly, consistent workers when Father John Martin leaves this community to assume his responsibilities as Pastor of the Eddyville, Iowa Parish. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to have worked with him, have, without a doubt, benefited from the association. There were many who were working...but not as mush as we might who felt shame whenever exposed to the zeal and sincerity of Father Martin. There were others..., who may never have come forth For him, this is a well earned promotion, and he is also moving into an area which needs an ardent worker in the field of civil rights, for the Ottumwa branch has long been a dormant one. It is our sincere hope that God will continue to bless and guide Father, as he leaves us! Although we are losing, it cannot be denied, we have gained much...and are being left with much, by him. ..."When you part from your friend, you grieve not; For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain. And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit..." -Kahbil Gibran The Youth Council members who were able to attend the State Conference meeting of the youth of the Iowa NAACP, were quite inspired by the sessions which were held. The adults in attendance, also, learned a lot about organization. As one talks to staff personnel such as Me. Leonard Carter, Field Secretary for our region, and, Mr. Laplois Ashford, National Youth Secretary, one cannot help bur feel that there is so much more each individual can and must do, on the local level. Our little 'sacrifices' cannot even begin to compare with theirs. From now on, we should be hearing more about the activities of the youth! Some committee reports are not complete nor have all of the chairmen filled the openings on their respective committees. We hope to have a listing ready for the next newsletter, however. All persons withing to help, are asked to attend the coming branch meeting. The 'Home Visits' are still being held, and continue to be interesting, and well worth the effort, however, participation by 'Host' families is not quite as we had hoped it would be. All of us have different viewpoints regarding the racial situation, so, if only a few people participate, the purpose of the visits is not being fulfilled. These 'visits' make it even more apparent that there is a definite lack of communication between the different groups, in this community. The intangible barrier is always the most difficult one to get rid of, in any case. However, we feel that this is really a step in the right direction. Join us, and see if you don't agree!
