Fort Madison Branch OF THE National Association for the Advancement of Colored People NEWSLETTER IKE SMALLS TROPHY WINNER OF '63 MAY 15,1964 Fort Madison, Iowa 51627 Regular monthly branch meeting! THURSDAY MAY 28, 1964 8 PM SACRED HEART HALL All members are urged to attend! Visitors are invited! Delegates and Alternates to attend the National Convention in Washington, D. C., June 22-27, will be selected at this meeting. All interested persons should be present! Plans are being made for the Medgar Evers Memorial Service which will be held at St. Joseph's Hall on June 12, 1964. Particulars will be announced, later. Members of the local Youth Council entertained students of Aquinas High School at a 'Home Visit' which was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Carter. Another such visit is scheduled to be held next week in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Woods. The exchange of ideas which takes place in these meetings is quite interesting and sincerity of the youth participants is heartening, to say the least! IF YOU HAVE NOT WRITTEN YOUR SENATORS ABOUT THE CIVIL RIGHTS BILL, PLEASE DO IT, TODAY! This is very important! Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, only this week announced that the most important action our country can take, as far as world affairs are concerned is to pass the civil rights bill. Lets hope this is also recognized by the politicians who are using this issue as a political football. The current debate is not looked upon as a game by many who have committed themselves in the present movement for civil rights for all, regardless of race, color or creed! Even though our records show we are over the goal which was set for our branch in the membership department,...we are asking everyone to help us go beyond this! If you have no joined..., why not do so? After all, all of us as human beings have a stake in this movement...and all of us are not able to march and demonstrate, nor are all of us involved in such a way that we will be going to jail,...nor, do all of us need to help, in this way! The important thing is for ALL of us to give that help which we are able to give. Freedom is not free! Lives have been lost, much personal effort has been and must be given,...many many dollars are needed to carry out the programs which the National Office has initiated! If you are a member,...try to get others to join! DON'T FORGET TO SUPPORT THE SELECTIVE BUYING CAMPAIGN AGAINST LEVER BROTHERS PRODUCTS!
