P=C May 9, 1970 4 (of 7) "Guard called . . ." [missing first part of article] is housed there. Firemen had the blaze contained by 6 a.m., but several men still were there three hours later. The middle portion of the structure was burned to the ground while charred sections on the north and south remained standing. The state fire marshal, his assistant and Bebee are investigating. City Fire Marshal Darel Forman also is on the case. Agents from the State Bureau of Criminal Investigation took two witnesses to the Police Station for questioning but no charges were filed. It was the second time that a fire is believed to have been set at the building. On May 6, 1969, a small blaze was set on outside steps and a flammable liquid was used. Damage was minor. The building was called "Big Pink" by students, presumably because of its color and barn-like construction. Earlier, after someone set off a smoke bomb in the men's restroom of the Civic Center, about 9 p.m. Friday, entry to the building was limited by two policement standing guard with shotguns. Another policeman was stationed on the roof. Members of REACT were stopping cars entering the Courthouse grounds. City firemen battled the blaze for about three hours before bringing it under control. Another picture on Page 2A. (Press-Citizen Photo)
