May 10, 1970 [printed] By TOM KUNCL iOWA CITY, Iowa - A pounding May rain brought a fragile peace to a shaken Unviersity of Iowa campus Saturday, but few here believed the crisis has passed. Tension is heavy here in the wake of continuing radical student demands that the 20,000-student university be shut down. The tension was fueled early Saturday morning when a university building was apparently set on fire deliberately by persons unknown. Flames from the building filled the sky shortly after large crowds that had gathered on the campus began to disperse. Fear that a full-scale confrontation may have been imminent has brought the presence of a 300-man detachment of National Guardsmen to the Johnson County Fairgrounds five miles south of this uneasy community. A plea by Dr. Willard Boyd, university president, that students finish the academic year, and a statement that "the cause of peace will not be served by destsroying this university," were rejected by militant students who were joined by the Student Senate which has passed a resolution in favor of ending the school year. Boyd said late Saturday he will make his decision sometime today and the community is bracing itself for violence if he does not accede to radical student demands. A group of about 300 students briefly violated a court injunction against demonstrations late Saturday night when they appeared in front of Boyd's home with signs urging that the university be closed Monday for the remainder of the academic year. The crowd dispersed after a short time and proceeded to the Memorial Union building where the activity center has been kept open all night since Thursday night. The entire unionwas kep open until 12:45 a.m.; one hour past the usual closing.
