This book is the result of our dissatisfaction with the facts and presentations offered by the various media regarding the events on the University of Iowa campus. The authors, editors and publishers of this book are all journalism majors at this University. We have seen, heard, evaluated and compared what we have been offered through the media and what we and others have experienced. We feel a great injustice has been done to all people concerned with and involved in the activities which have taken place. In order to correct this injustice, we feel it is necessary to develope a frame of reference and a comprehensive context from which you, as well as we, will be able to understand what is going on at the present time and what led up to its actualization. We are not attempting to judge anyone- their personal thoughts or actions. Nor are we assuming that we can relate what has gone on here with the actions of others on campuses across this nation. We are merely making what we consider a necessary attempt to clarify the actual from the implied. It seems to us that the media have concentrated and limited their efforts to the sensationalism effects. This distorts what is presented. If we succeed at explaining and clarifying the issues here and if it contradicts what you were led to believe prior to reading this, then maybe what we have done must be done in all instances similar to this. There is a definite possibility that news and its presentation should be critically analyzed and changed in order to avoid confusion and distortion. We ask that you take the time to read this book and that when you have finished, you evaluate the news coverage in your area and compare it to what we have said. We hope we have supplied you with a more concrete, comprehensive analysis which will aid you, as it has us, in the understanding of what really occured here. Media Operations Association
