12 CHAMBER OF COMMERCE INTERACTS WITH STUDENTS One result of this Sping's disruptions at the University of Iowa has been the formation of a communication channel between students and townspeole. As a result of window-breaking action in downtown Iowa City the night of May 4, which ended in the arrest of 51 students and damage to over a dozen downtown store windows, Leslie A. Moore, a retired businessman, set up a committee of businessmen and students. He chaired the first meeting May 7. According to Keith Kafer, Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice-President, "The first meeting was called to try to equate breaking windows with hatred of the war." The result has been a series of meetings in running dialogue form with each side expressing their feelings and trying to work out mutual problems without actually converting the other to their way of thinking. The goal of the group has been to try to accomplish good will and communications between students and the city. Since the first meeting, the Chamber has taken over the committee. Mr. Moore said, "When you break down communications, you break down all we have. We can't even be friends. We don't have to agree with each other, but we shouldn't get in a position where we can't talk to each other." RALLY 3 P.M. ONE WAY sign
