- 12 - The process at the beginning of the 1969-70 school year was as follows: SUI The Committee on Student Conduct consisted of eleven members - six nominated by Faculty Senate - five by Student Senate for appointment by President. Its jurisdiction is on all cases involving possible suspension or dismissal of the student for disciplinary reasons. Also, jurisdiction on appeals from actions taken by Office of Student Affairs. Also the Committee reviews appeals from lower court decisions and from Office of Student Affairs decisions involving traffic court cases. Some points: 1. Chairman of Committee appointed by President. 2. Seven member board hears cases - at least 3 Faculty - 3 Students. 3. Members serve 2 year terms. 4. Cases brought to Committee by Office of Student Affairs and Complaint filed by office. 5. Committee decides whether hearing open or closed. 6. Chairman gives student written notice of charges. 7. Student has choice of appearing or not appearing. 8. Student can be assisted by advisor of his choosing. 9. Formal rules of evidence do not apply. 10. Taped record kept of hearing which record is then locked up. 11. Simple majority (4 votes) decides guilt and sanction except 5 votes are required to suspend or dismiss a student 12. Appeals are made to President of University. ISU The Student-Faculty Committee on Student Behavior consists of 7 members - 3 teaching staff members named by President - 3 students nominated by Government of Student Body and appointed by President. The 7th member is the Dean of Students. This Committee deals with all violations of the Code of the Student Community not heard by the individual conduct committees in residence halls. Also appeals from these committees and from the Student Supreme Court. Only the Committee may suspend or expel a student. 1. Chairman named by President 2. Quorum consists of 2 students, 2 teaching staff members and Chairman 3. Dean of Students acts as Secretary 4. Dean of Students presents case to Committee.
