"Boyd Boots 2, Puts 9 on Probation" DI July 24, 1970 Students Hit For Spring Disorders University President Willard Boyd suspended two students and placed nine others on disciplinary probation Thursday. Bruce Clark, A2, Iowa City, and Carmen Clark, A2, Iowa City, were suspended immediately until the end of the 1970-71 fall semester. The Clarks are charged with violating the Code of Student Life on April 18 during a demonstration that disrupted a Pershing Rifles drill competition; on May 1 when a Reserve officer Traiing Corps (ROTC) awards ceremony was disrupted; and on May 13 when a bundle of Daily Iowans were taken from Hawkeye Court Apartments and burned on the steps of Old Capitol to protest the firing of The Daily Iowan Editor Leona Durham. In letters sent to Bruce Clark at a family address in Des Moines and to Carmen Clark at a family address in Bellevue, Boyd warned the students that if either of them re-registers after the end of their suspensions, he or she will be placed on disciplinary probation for 24 months. Also, if during the probationary period either should commit an act in violation of the State Board of Regents' Uniform Rules of Personal Conduct, he or she will be suspended for a minimum of one year. They were also advised that if during the next 24 months either should commit an act that is found to violate the regents' rules, he or she will be denied the right to register for 12 months from the date of such violation. Six students were placed on disciplinary probation effective immediately through the end of the 1970-71 spring semester for code violations stemming from the April 18 demonstration. The students are Deborah Bayer, A3, Iowa City; Albert Cloud, G, Iowa City; John W. Johnson, B4, Des Moines; Fred Purdy, G, Hazel Park, Mich.; Sheri Raders, A2, Iowa City; and Kathleen A. Young, A2, Council Bluffs. Three students are on probation through the coming school year as a result of violating the code during the May 1 demonstration. They are John Fulton, A2, Clinton; Bruce Ehrich, A2, Cherokee; and Darleen Mallonee, A2, Denison. Each student placed on probation was advised by Boyd that if during the probationary period he or she should commit an act of misonduct in violation of the regents' rule, he or she will be suspended from the university for a minimum for 12 months. Also, if during the next 12 months any of the students should commit an act while a non-student that is found to violate the substance of the regents rules, he or she will be denied the right to register at the university for a period of 12 months from the date of such violation. Boyd imposed the sanctions after reviewing the findings and recommendations of the university's temporary hearing officer, Theodore Garfield, retired chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court. Garfield held hearings last month on the charges brought against the students. The 11 students were charged under section five of the General Conduct Regulations of the code, which prohibits disruption and obstruction; and section seven, prohibiting unauthorized entries. Sam Sloss, G, Grimes, was also charged, but charges were dropped against him when he presented proof that he was in St. Louis, Mo., at the time of his alleged actions. Though Garfield made no suspension recommendations in the findings sent out to the involved students, he did recommend the probation periods for those who were found guilty under section five in the April disturbance.
