DMR 12/17/70 Charge 10 Broke Regents Rules in Sit-in at U of I By a Staff Writer IOWA CITY, IA - Ten persons - including seven University of Iowa students - have been charged by U of I officials with violating university antidisruption rules in connection with the Dec. 9 sit-in at the U of I placement office. In addition, the radical Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) - currently on probation for its participation in a demonstration last year - is charged with violating the U of I rules against disruption. Names of the individuals charged were not released by the university. Under U of I conduct hearing rules, a student may request a closed hearing. University officials said Wednesday that DS sponsored a noon rally in the Iowa Memorial Union on Dec. 9. They said " a group estimated at up to 50" gathered in a corridor outside the door of the placement office. At the time newsmen estimated about 150 persons took part in the sit-in Send Letters Letters notifying the 10 individuals and SDS of the university's charges were sent out Wednesday, U of I officials said. The 10 are asked to appear at a conduct hearing to be held sometime after Jan. 4, the date classes here resume following Christmas vacation. Two of those charged also are accused of violating the Code of Student Life in connection with he entry of students into College of Liberal Arts office after the placement office sit-in broke up. About 25 to 30 persons confronted liberal arts Dean Dewey B. Stuit at his office. The demonstration at the placement office was called in protest of a scheduled appearance by a recruiter for the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) . Three non-students also are charged in connection with the two Dec. 9 incidents, U of I officials said. Under the State Board of Regents Uniform Rules of Personal Conduct, a non-student who has been cited by a regents institution would require a hearing before he could enroll in any regents institution. Students found guilty of university charges face disciplinary action ranging from probation to dismissal. Tell Violations Among other items, university officials said the 10 persons charged in last week’s sit-in violated the regents rules on the following points: “Intentional obstruction or disruption of teaching, research, administration, disciplinary procedures or other university-authorized function or event. “Unauthorized occupation or use of or unauthorized entry into any university facility. “Intentional interference with the right of access to university facilities or with the lawful right of any person on campus.”
