P-C 12/22/70 UI Student Acquitted In May 5 Protest Case Police Judge Joseph Thornton has acquitted a University of Iowa student, Karyl Weaver, 19, in her trial on a disorderly conduct charge filed May 5 in connection with demonstrations in the downtown area here. Trial dates for 39 others arrested the same day have not yet been set. Miss Weaver was accused of blocking the sidewalk at Washington and Gilbert Streets after being ordered by police to leave the area. She testified at her trial that she attempted to leave the area but that the large crowd prevented her from doing so. She had been free on $200 bond, which was later reduced to $100. Miss Weaver and the others were among 51 arrested on disorderly conduct charges early the morning of May 5 after a night that saw windows broken downtown and crowds of UI students and others facing off with police on East Washignton Street. Eleven of those charged entered guilty pleas May 6 and were sentenced later that month. Set for Jan. 4 is the mass trial of 212 persons arrested on disorderly conduct charges in a peaceful demonstration later the same week. Both demonstrations were held in protest to the American invasion of Cambodia and the killing of four students at Kent State University.
