To The Editor: In the April 5th edition of the Daily Iowan, it was reported that three university administrators were opposed to divesting the University's stock in South Africa because they felt that the U of I should remain politically neutral and that "divesting stock, is in fact, taking a stance on the apartheid issue." This makes no sense to me. Given this statement I can only conclude that when the University originally invested in that stock that they were also "taking a stance on the apartheid issue." A stance that clearly supported the racist regime. A stance that exists to this very day. To claim neutrality is a privilege born of ignorance. Ignorance is a tragic thing, particularly at an institute of (supposed) higher learning. Sincerely, Tess Catalano 924 E Market St 337-5605 please do NOT print my address and phone number
