THE COMET PAGE 13 AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF DAMON KNIGHT Who me? Well, i'm 17, which is the average age for the backyard variety fan, although we have a few old timers like Bob Tucker, who has a wife and eleven children. And Sully Roberds. I'm a senior attending Hood River Senior High School, and - if you must know the sordid details - about 5 feet 10 and 127 pounds. Born in Baker, Oregon, migrated to Hood River when very young, and eked out an existance here ever since. At a tender age I began astonishing old ladies by telling them, when asked, that my favorite author was Edgar Rise Burroughs. I thought at the time I had made a good impression, but it occurs to me now, like as not, these same old ladies reffered to me as 'the little snot' after I had gone. On due reflection, I now believe I was the little snot. Along about 15, however, I began ceasing to be a little snot, although I dare not say that no one has since spoken of me as such. I was introduced to science fiction some seven years ago, with 'The Meteor-Men of Plan[?]' in an old AMAZING. I have been a full-fledged fan only - let me see - since last may, when I sent for my first fan magazine, which happened to be a copy of Tucker's now defunct NOVA. Since then, this promiscuous reading of stf. and fanmags has borne its inevitable harvest. I am an editor. The name of the enfant terrible is SNIDE. I called it that because I liked the name. I still like it, and I stubbornly refuse to change, no matter what the dictionaries say. That's about all of me, except that I want to be an artist or a commercial illustrator or something, and that I have sold one cartoon to Ziff-Davis and hope to sell more. My favorite authors are Cabell, Charteris, Wodehouse, Thorne Smith, and Ernest Bramah, my favorite movie actor as Donald Duck, and I don't like eggs, neckties, or preachers.
