The Thing Published by Burton Crane* and Helen Wesson Summer 1946 -- Whole No. 2 AFTER JUNE 1. CHANGE OF ADDRESS MRS. SHELDON WESSON ESS TEXTILES GHQ SCAP TOKYO APO 500 San Francisco AFTER JUNE 1. When you bought all those ON TO TOKYO! bonds, betcha you never thought it would I who'd invade Japan, armed with pots and pans and a mimeograph. But I depart momentarily, as soon as the Army rings the doorbell to crate me and ship me to my lank Yank with the cute snoot, now a civilian (hooray!) in MacArthur's HQ. I'm P.O.E.-bound, complete to shots--typhus shots, plague shots, something-for-everything shots. By the time the Medics get through injecting me full of fluid, I'll be delivered in a state of ambulant embalmment. La Zombie. All of this has and will have reverberations into Fantasy. This issue, for instance...The pages aren't numbered. Stencil and run, stencil and run. Whenever the Army announces itself, I'll put what's completed together, and mail and RUN. (I may also use up some off-size but pre-war lush bond I found while packing.) Plans are being made to issue TUT from Japan. So far I've had pretty much my own way about this zine. At this distance, Bertie can't dispute my "I couldn't fit it in" or "It arrived too late" or just plain "Nutz to you." (He could also ignore my rantings, though.) HOWEVER, with BOTH Wessonmale AND Crane breathing hard over my shoulders...the only good I can see in that is that the next TUT will be slip-sheeted if they don't leave me be. If the jap maid and cook propaganda materializes, I'll have time to make contemplated,hitherto-impossible innovations in TUT. At any rate, I can promise that 1. I shall acknowledge with lengthy discussion ALL fanzines received. 2. I shall answer ALL letters. (My ghod, Wesson will make an honest woman out of me yet.) From now on, I suppose, all our nudes will look like this: [[arrow illustration pointing to bottom of page]] *Crane's address: PRO GHQ AFPAC Tokyo, APO 500 San Francisco
