new member. In fact, I shall probably broach this matter to the board of directors later this year, when certain more urgent business has been taken care of. At present, the idea needs considerably more developing--particularly along the line of organization--and the definite weak spots of such a program need to be brought out and discussed. For example, what would be done to an embryo Degler or Ludowitz? How could the program be kept going without being shown to the newcomer as an obvious arrangement? (By that, I mean that much of the value would be lost if the neophyte was made to feel that his prize correspondent Speer, or Tucker, or Warner was writing to him in fulfillment of an unavoidable duty. Steps should be taken,if possible, to make the correspondence look unarranged.) Would the older fan be expected to make any reports, and if so to whom and why? And so on. While the idea in its present form is admittedly rough, I am inclined to believe that it contains a certain amount of value. Won't the rest of you please kick it around a little and see what can develop from it? If memory serves correctly, NFFF did have a welcomittee functioning to write new members. It was all very social but didn't hit the nail square--it takes an active publisher, who knows the ropes well himself and can give explicit, technical advice on the annoying small details. :: And why the distaste for 13-year-olds? The group elected Sam Moscowitz director, Gerry de la Ree treasurer, Rick Slavin secretary, and gave the director appointive powers for other offices and committees. These officers will serve for a three-month trial period, during which time the effectiveness of present methods of running the club will be tested. Dues of 35 cents per month were agreed upon, also for a three-month period, and it was decided that meetings would b held at Sokol Hall on the second Sunday of each month. The A-Men can already be credited with the successful Science-Fiction Convention held at Sokol Hall recently, which was attended by 107 fans, including "name" writers and editors for the pulps. An auction of originals and magazines netted the A-Men $50 as a basis for the club treasury. ..JIM LAMANNA & HW 15-4/50 IS STILL OUR PRICE UNLESS... 1.
