these dumb yokels!") "Give me the robot," he addressed Jack. "Here is the tube." The transaction was quickly completed and the man hurried down the street as if in fear of pursuit. Jack stood looking after him for a minute and then went back to his helicopter. He took off and was soon on his way home, the tube safely in his pocket. Bringing the laboring 'copter to rest a few feet from the modest cottage that was his home, he hopped out and strode toward the house, where his mother was waiting. "How much did you get?" she greeted him anxiously. "Give it to me so I can send it out over to the matter transmitter right away." "Oh," Jack said, "I didn't get any weetongs for it, Mother. I traded it for this." He held out the glittering tube proudly. "What! Oh, you foolish boy!" she cried. "I knew I should have done it myself. Now we won't be able to pay the energy bill. What will become of us?" she wailed. "Don't worry, Mother," said Jack, looking dreamily at the tube. "Everything will work out all right in the end. It always does in these bedtime stories." He went up the moving stairs to his room and laboratory. Though they were poor, Jack had managed to build quite a lot of equipment in the small room he used for a laboratory and workshop. At the present, he was making some experiments with time travel. The tube he had acquired in the city was just what he needed to complete his time machine. Eagerly he made last minute adjustments and tests, and then turned on the machine. A low hum came from the apparatus-- colored lights flickered weirdly on the walls of the room. Jack drew a deep breath and then stepped into the energy field. An observer would have seen Jack turn bright yellow and then fade from view. Jack had no way of telling where he was going to land -- or when -- so you can see how brave and daring this young lad was. As he pulled the switch, blackness descended in a rushing tide, and he sank to the floor. Darkness pierced with splashes of light swept through his brain.H e felt as if he were being whirled around and around..... Gradually things returned to normal and Jack stood up. He was apparently standing on clouds, and in front of him, not a hundred feet away, was a magnificent castle. The castle was built on a larger scale than any other building he had ever seen. On the front wall of the stupendous edifice a neon sign glared: BEWARE! HOME OF YE GIANT. BONES OF ENGLISHMEN GROUND INTO BREAD EVERY TUESDAY & FRIDAY. The home of a giant! That was it! Unknowingly, Jack had gone into the past, and was now on the site of that classic tale, "Jack and the Beanstalk." It was all them ore amazing when you consider the fact that our hero, too, was named Jack... Overcoming his astonishment, he crept cautiously toward the castle. So far, the coast was clear. All was silent save for a rather loud and raucous female voice singing a little song. Throwing caution to the winds, Jack entered the front door and looked around the corner. There was the woman, singing as she stirred a greenish liquid that seethed and bubbled in a vast copper pot, suspended above an open hearth fire. Several -16-
