comment, dissertations on money and credit, accounts of debates, and Great Thoughts of Great Thinkers in general. You would be surprised at the amount of time this saves. But one must know how to apply the tests. A high and mighty disdain for all discussion of abstract ideas is simply another form of mental confusion." Semantics is clearly one of the most important sciences of our time, and it is my opinion that The Tyranny of Words does an excellent job of orienting the newcomer to the field. I heartily recommend the reading of this book to every open-minded fan who is interested in anything wider in scope than whether Weird Tales is superior to Astounding S-F. ((Shame on you, Elsner! That's a high-order abstraction!)) THE SUMMONING The moon was overcast that night; The sky was black as sin, And all the mortals of the earth Curst with the sign of Ky'hal at birth Made haste to let me in. Unlocking door on door on door-- Beyond, the primal secret lay-- With juice of mandrake, wombat blood, And tesseracts outlined in mud, They first prepared the way. Within the corridor of time I slept in fathomless repose, Then something murmured small and dim, "The votaries shall welcome him; The silence breaks . . the summons grows!" Awake, awake -- the dawn at last! I stretched my wings in cosmic flight And dipped past galaxy and star While chanting beckoned from afar, Into the reaches of light. The stars shall pale tonight, I sang, As I crossed the shadowed moon; White circle on a dungeon floor, Gossamer symbol; forbidden lore Of an ancient druidic rune. -- JOHN HOLBROOK CALEY VAMPIRE EGO-BOO ACKNOWLEDGEMENT CORNER We want to take this opportunity to say things to all the fans and fenne who voted Vamp #1 fanzine in Gerry de la Ree's recent Beowulf poll. We loves yuh one and all. - 20 -
