11 Winer (Art, jr.) "The cover photos were much appreciated. Swisher and I spotted the why and how of the Martian landscape easily. Martin simply made a large cardboard, or wood cut out of the ship, set it up on the ice floes of Lake Michigan (or where ever he hangs out) and made the shot. The dark sky was no doubt obtained with a filter. ((and infra-red film... correct *Editor)) The "Rocket" is no doubt a miniature model, shot against a black background, with black strings or supports for the model. The moon was probably dubbed in later. A little powder like that used in the 4th of July fountains could supply the rocket trail. Anyhow, it's a swell job, and and just the thing to frame and hang up along with a fan's originals. Hope you can afford a cover like this every time. Martin should have spattered a little ink on the negative with a toothbrush and we'd have had lots of nice stars. ... Then in Mass. Division, he (Schwartz) gets somewhat befuddled. Dick Stucke and Allen Davis came only a few times and have not been around for several month indicating loss of interest. Al Lopez is a regular attendee and will certainly be incensed to find himself in the RR. Also Jack Bell, while not able to make it often since I and Foo Foo Special have moved away from that district, is definitely not R-R. Latest additions include a couple of beautiful names. Arseni Karpovitch and Tex Mangelsdorg, and of course, Betty Ann and Katherine May Swisher. Another center of civilization has been discovered. A fellow, name of Claude Bertram Weaver, wrote me about the Sphinx Club in Worcester (central part of the state). We hope to have a state conference soon, if he replies to my reply." - Quincy, Mass. MULRAIN (Pvt. C.E.) "Like your idea of adopting a fan (in service) and sending them pro mags. How about Fanzines? About the only two I get are LeZ ad Spaceways. Fanzines in my case would be appreciated more than pro, as the only pros I read are Astounding and Weird Tales. With so many fans in service and going into service maybe it would B a good idea if we formed a special organization for fans in the army or navy." Lez sez: Yes, how about it, fan editors? How about placing every fan in service upon you 'complimentary subscription' list? We'll cheerfully lead the way. We imagine that some of the fans in the far reaches of the world would appreciate a steady flow of fanzines. Sure it will cost you money... before this war is over you may find from fifty to a hundred fans in service. But think what they are doing for you. Incidentally, Mulrain's latest address is : Hqd. Sad., Group A; S.B. Air Base, San Bernardino, California. (*) Winer informs that Dave Kyle can be found: Hqd. Co., II Armored Corps, Camp Polk, La. (*) Meanwhile feel free to write us for any addresses we may have. ALGER (Martin) "If I can elude the slimy talons of Local Board #1 long enough I hope to work up another pic, Moonscape, with air dromes, rocket port, etc. in crater with huge earth over crater rim. Think I can make it ok if I got the chance." Mackinaw City, Michigan. LeZ prays: that you get the chance! CLOSING OF THE MEETING DEPT: Our publishing schedule is erratic but we expect to be back in about two months. If we get out six issues a year, we're satisfied. Surrender dear, and be satisfied with us.
