recent trends in science fiction THE FIRST OF A NEW SERIES by THOMAS S. GARDNER I. ASTOUNDING SCIENCE-FICTION All types of literature slowly evolve with time. Science-fiction is not an exception. It is possible to examine the whole field & note trends over a period of years; fads that come & go, & different slants on treating problems. However, it is also interesting to examine a magazine & note the trends that impress one most. Such an examination would not necessarily mean that all the various trends were created, but as it is a custom of human nature to pay more attention to disagreeable aspects rather than good points, let us discuss the points in ASF within the last three years that have irked yours truly. Lest there be any misunderstanding, I'd like to start by stating that in the author's opinion ASF is so far above any & all other stf magazines that it cannot be compared nor even rated on the same scale as the rest of them. It is the only one which he whole-heartedly recommends to his friends to read. The stories found in Astounding are classics - well written, plotted, & have characterization. A great deal of this is due to the influence of the Editor, John W. Campbell, who is not only one of the ten top writers himself, but has carefully selected his writers for ability.
