DOLLS WITH PINS by milton a. rothman Are there real witches in the world? Can one person kill another by sticking pins into a doll? Does magic work? According to William Seabrook in his book on witchcraft, the answer is yes -- up to a certain point. There are people who consider themselves to be witches, & they can kill people without touching them. If that is magic, then it works. But the only magic present exists solely in the mind. Pins in dolls can't work unless the victim knows what is being done, & what is intended. Then he simply frightens himself to death, & he doesn't have to believe in the dolls, either. There was the case of the Africans who went after the band white man. They fixed up the doll & recited the incantations, but the real magic was accomplished by the white man's servants who put thru a plan of subtle suggestion that would have been the envy of any psychologist. "How do you feel today?" was the line they started with. Finally, "reluctantly", they divulged full details concerning the doll & the curses. At the time he was supposed to hear drums in his head, the natives set up an orchestra of drums out in the woods, keeping up the beating night & day, but according to the magic he was hearing them in his head. "How is your throat today? Oh good, you can still breathe. We were afraid the new curse had started working." The next day the man stopped breathing.
