still don't care much for his so-called style. It hasn't the screwball consistency of de Camp, or the chill of Lovecraft or James. It is practically impossible to combine humor & weirdness. JC succeeded fairly well in "Home for Xmas", but only becoz the ending was fairly well concealed. There are plenty of old anglo-saxon words which form plurals regularly, besides the irregulars. So, until things get straightened out to my satisfaction, i'll continue to razz the English language by using "fen" etc. Thanx for the attention to Shortype, but due to the nearly universal condemnation heaped upon it, i'm abandoning it as not worth the bother. It is far more work to change people's prejudices, or overcome their inertia to change, than it is to work out the idea of the change itself. I'll admit, as i did in the introduction of the article itself, that Shortype is far from perfect: & probably the criticism of The Apostate (Jim Blish?) was most nearly correct. Too simple & too ugly. Also i agree with his further comments & Chan Davis' decision to revert to "English". There would be no point whatever in beating my chops on the way i do around here, if nobody is going to read the stuff. FAN-DANGO #7: Guess you're just stupid, Fran, since besides the several fen who read Shortype without much difficulty, some of my non-fan friends also were able to "struggle" thru it. Mayhap you misplaced the decimal in recording your IQ, & it should have read 18.3? Yukyukyuk. Sure, an anarchistic project can succeed, but in the long run, in human society (of which we are a part, you know), organization has always proved superior to anarchy in getting things done, & promoting progress. If the NFFF is a dud, (& i don't admit that it is) it's the fault of the people who comprise it, & not organization itself.
