THE FANTASITE 16 club activities, rehearsals, arranging and Casanoving, if that's what you'd call it. Reads science fiction when he sees what he thinks he'll like, a method which is fast becoming popular across the country. Reads Weird and Unknown any time they're in reach, and prefers pure fantasy to the bang-bang stuff. Has done some writing, and has had a story printed in Astounding. "The Time Bender", in the August 1937 issue, was a Blakely concoction, with revisions and final script by Saari. Doesn't like: Winter, and that is about the only thing we have heard him denounce. On the other hand, he likes: Campbell, swimming, Charlie Barnet, high-powered cars, cats, Algernon Blackwood, food, Strawinsky's Firebird Suite, Gershwin, Lovecraft, Coronet, Tibbett and food, or did I say that? Science fictionally, he liked best of all Campbell's Arcot, Morey and Wade series and Williamsons' Legion of Space. In the fantasy field his favorite is still A. Merritt's Moon Pool. And who knows -- he may be the lucky one chosen to write the biography of Squanchfoot! ---Squanchfoot SCIENTIFICTION--SPECIALIZED By lew Martin Every time a bunch of fans get together an argument usually ensues about the respective merits of the various professional magazines. In the columns of the fanmag Spaceways, a minor feud has been raging between Miske and Reinsberg respectively. This is a mere twaddle. Why should there be an argument when there is no accurate method of comparing the professional magazines? There has been much ado over nothing. Does Astounding lead to the field, or does Amazing? There is no universal answer to this. The solution lies in the insignificant word "Specialization". This is the age of specialization, and science fiction cannot escape -- it either specializes or ceases to exist. Why? Simple. I earnestly believe that Astounding leads the science fiction field. Perhaps you do not -- the 11 year old reader probably does not. I'll take the more advanced science and writing techniques -- they'll take the pseudo-science adventures with fast moving heroes killing Martians right and left. There is no compromise, no one magazine could successfully feature the Astounding and Amazing material. True, it would attract some readers, but those who like the Amazing trash would find that only half of the magazine is like they want, consequently they would turn to a magazine that presented the entire contents of their type. The same goes for the more advanced readers with Astounding-type material. Why condemn Amazing -- it is reaching a public Astounding never will, and why condemn Astounding -- it is reaching an audience that Amazing never will. Each mag is tops in its own specialized field -- each is bottom in the other's. Why debate upon it -- there is only one answer -- SPECIALIZATION. ((The above article is slightly dated, but still interesting we think--Ed. )) WHY THE SOLAROIDS ABANDONED THE PROPOSED NEWARKON--contd foolish to commit ourselves by printing such an untrue statement. Thus the Newarkon went up like a puff of smoke, but before I quit I have a little more to say. I believe that Taurasi, Sykora, and Moskowitz should not be blamed too much, and Moskowitz least of all. It seems to me that when you dislike a person as much as those three dislike the Futurians, that there is really little you can do about it, and you'll go to any means to get even with them. So, summing it up,that's why the Solaroids abandoned the proposed Newarkon!
