10. Science Adventure Stories *********************************************************** A platinum resistance coil hanging from the ceiling grew hot, and began to glow. The swear dripped from Adman's forehead, as the refrigerators labored over dispersing the heat. The brilliance of the resistance increased to a dazzling blue, and presently the metal began to sag. Adman hurriedly threw another tumbler, shunting the rushing power into a roaring arc which made an incandescent hell of the two foot space between the electrodes. "What a weapon!" the director whispered. "Weapon?" Adman turned, startled. "I hadn't thought. . . No. . . It couldn't be used for that! Think of the power!" "Yes! Just what we need now. With this on our side the war can be over almost as soon as we make more of these." "War?" "Why, yes. Didn't you know?" "No. I suppose since I started on this. I hadn't heard. But we couldn't use this power. I really don't know what might result. Almost anything. No! You just can't." "Oh, come." The director grew impatient. "You will be the greatest hero of the nation. Think of the fame for being the cause of our victory. Come. I will report to the government immediately." "Stop! Don't go! Adman shouted hoarsely. "I won't let you use this machine for killing people. It's too dangerous."
