17. Retribution ********************************************************* August 9. This day has been a momentous one. The "operation" seems to have been successful. Shelley gave me a bit of trouble, tho. He refused to eat the drugged food I had given to him, thus forcing me to administer the anaesthetic by means of a hyperdermic injection. Aside from being too involved to explain in a few words, I have no desire to write Professor Markley's secret -- and mine -- down on paper. Suffice to say that after they had been under the influence of the tubes for three hours, I was reasonably sure that the exchange of personalities had been affected. Caul has the stronger will, so, naturally his transplanted consciousness--in the monkey's body--was the first to show an awareness of its surroundings. Mutterings and distorted human speech came from Shelleys lips. Caul's body remained still evinced no sigh of returning to life. I began to fear that Shelley's brain had been too weak to withstand the rigors of the experiment. Soon, however, Caul's bossy, too, began to stir uneasily. I had taken the precaution of blindfolding both subjects so that they would be unable to see, and, therefore, unable to cause any damage before they became accustomed to their new forms.
