28. Science Adventure Stories ********************************************************* the age of futility. "but what did I do?" The girl sighed and continued: "It is a strange story. According to the ancient records of your flight into the future . . . the present time . . . you saw and heard things undreamed of by the Utopian civilization from whence you come. The purpose of your coming was, according to the aspirations conceived by your fellow scientists, to probe the Future in the Time Transformer, for discerning the not-improbable pitfalls, however slight, that the future might hold for mankind. They believed that by exploring the future, they might alter the circumstances to their own scientific advantage, should the days to come portend evil. But, in spite of their scientific advancement, they were a bigoted lot! They really brought the destruction upon their heads by pulling it down with their own hands, so to speak. It was folly, not scientific acquisition, that they accomplished. However, that does not mean that had you not undertaken the trip into Time, that the future of man would have been different. Because they brought the Future with its unhappy outcome upon themselves." "How did that happen?" Myron asked. Alora continued: "With your return, the following day, after your voyage into the realms of time, you told the World Council Combine incredible things. Portraying for t them the early demise of the city, the scenes of desolation and the war to come brought about the beginning of the Downfall. Of course, you related everything as it happened, as the records have always shown, but the facts were too much for your so-called Utopian civilization.."
