29. Return To The Future ********************************************************** "But the war . . . what war can you be referring to?" "The Final Folly. It happened ninety-six years after your departure into Time, prior to the End of the World." "What do you mean?" "I had forgotten that you never heard of the coming of the Dark Star. Its coming was really the confirmation of your experience in the Future, which humanity ridiculed and scoffed, fearing to face the facts. Its effect on mankind was disastrous. The discovery of its coming was the signal for the first blows of the Final War." Myron said: "So that accounts for these ruins and the premature extinction of humanity?" "Yes," replied Alora. "However, upon your return to the year of 3000, your tale of the fate of mankind was believed by but a very few. Men scoffed and ridiculed your doings and refused to face the facts, which were only too true. They could not imagine anything happening to them in their security . . . indeed, not in this Utopian age! Inasmuch as nothing disastrous had ever occurred to them, so should things continue. Thus was their belief. Luxuries lured. The hours of labor were reduced and pleasure increased. Old formalities were discarded and now freedom reigned. Slight dissentions arose occasionally as the early years progressed and quarrels ensued. Crime was reborn, increased, and dominated. The lust for blood and wealth returned to many and international harmony fell into decadence. Riots and strife followed. The Utopian
