35. Return To The Future ************************************************************ "And now civilization met its very end. The last ravages and blasts of war were succeeded by natures climaxing gesture. Terrific lightening, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, tidal waves and climactic conditions made earth almost impossible for life. Men forgot their cause . . . those who survived were numbered. Searing heat from the earth's interior drove them on, ever on. The polar regions were no more; they were melted and semi-tropical "The astronomical observatories were lost in the wave of destruction. All was unorganized. Only one month remained before the sun should crash. "As the Dark Star swung ever closer to the sun with which it should soon collide, our sun grew formless. The tidal drag of the Dark Star caused this with its own enormous gravitational attraction. The resultant heat and light from our sun was something never before experienced in the lives of men. It was unbearable. Even the seas were quickly evaporating under this terrific radiation. The air was stifling and watery. There were no more nights. The Dark Star reflected the sun's light even as the moon used to. The planets reflected the sun's rays and those refracted from the Dark Star with unparalleled brilliance. "Presently these things were lost in the heavy clouds that formed as the last Day approached. Storms ravaged the lands and the seas; even the mountains were shifted! "Only a few dozen people survived during this time and more by good fortune than good judgement. They surely must have trembled at what they witnessed.
