47. Van Quirk's Lunar Cable ************************************************************ wrieter even went so far as to say that electrically driven cars would be carried along this cable, and that mining operations would be carried on with ease upon the moon. The second day the world awoke with the realization that something was wrong. And there was something radically wrong! During the rotation of the earth, the cable had begun to wind itself around the earth! The entire world was shaken by devastating earthquakes. One daring American made a wager that it was possible to ride a bicycle over the cable and across the Atlantic Ocean, and was preparing to prove his claims by doing that very thing himself. People were at last beginning to realize that the end of the world was at hand unless the cable was cut, for every time it wound around the earth it was drawing the moon closer and it was evident that in a few short days the Lunar body would crash into the earth. Frantic were the efforts to cut the cable, but it had been made too well, and neither acids nor tools would be able to sever it in time to save the earth. Professor Q Van Quirk blasted his associates as well as the engineers who had undertaken this mad scheme. Why couldn't they have foreseen such an even as this? Of all the dumbbells who had ever lived on earth, they took all the prizes. Man now began to prepare himself for the end of the world. During the course of history he had got ready for this event many times, but that was usually because some religious prophet wished to immortalize himself by giving the date of the end of the world. Some drowned their worries and sorrows in wild parties and drink. Some went on with their work as though nothing was going to
